What is considered a product / trade item?
A product / trade item is any product form that is needed for full event-based traceability. For example, raw material and finished goods, even if the same species and part of the same supply chain, are considered separate products / trade items. Wholechain can use, but does not require GTINs or UPCs for a Product / Trade Item.
What is an event?
An event is when a Product / Trade Item is undergoing a step in its business lifecycle where data needs to be recorded for traceability or compliance purposes. In Wholechain, these events are broken down into eight categories and each can be further subdivided to best capture the business-specific step that is being taken and in need of a data record [e.g., a transform event is used whenever raw material is processed into final goods; an aggregate event is used whenever cases are loaded onto a pallet or into a container].
Is Wholechain designed for any one specific commodity?
No. Wholechain is designed to be commodity-agnostic. Our flexible template engine allows users to define and capture the supply chain data most relevant to their industry and needs. These templates can be shared with trading partners to specify both the data required and the format expected, enabling tailored, scalable traceability across any supply chain.
Can I customize the data collected in my Wholechain records?
Yes, you can build and edit data templates to include both standardized and custom Key Data Elements (KDEs) in a traceability event. Wholechain supports alignment with GS1, GDST, and PTI — but is flexible enough to meet your internal and regulatory needs.
Why does Wholechain use blockchain to record traceability data?
Blockchain provides a tamper-evident, decentralized record that enhances trust. Once a traceability event is recorded, it cannot be changed — giving all supply chain participants confidence in the accuracy and integrity of the data.
